Samsung Galazy Tab

We really liked the video because they explained all the great features available with the Galaxy Tablet, they displayed these in different ways using different camera angles and techniques. The video had no voiceover but instead used music and captions, the music helped keep our attention focused to the video so we could read what was being said. Throughout the video they showed all the available features of the tablet and why it's so great and convienent. The elements in the video were used great. As a group we gave this video an 8/10.

Social Networking

Which social networks do students use the most?!
We chose this question because we are frequent social network users and wanted to see what ones are the most popular. Our target group was 24 grade 10 students. We gathered the data by an online multiple choice survey. The results that we gathered is that 70.8% used facebook the most, followed by 33.3% for twitter, 12.5% used tumblr, and 8.3% used pintrest and other the most. Compared to the findings on the handout, people get on facebook everytime they get on the computer, and everytime after class that compares to our data because we also found that facebook was the most popular social network. We also assumed that facebook would be the most popular. The media literacy key concepts that relate to our data are: all media construct reality and media have social and political implications.

Bieber Fever !

Justin Drew Bieber was born on March 1, 1994 in Stratford, Ontario to now-separated parents Pattie Mallette and Jeremy Bieber. This Canadian native had a humble start; it all began in 2007 when Justin and his mother posted videos on YouTube of his Stratford star competition for family and friends who could not make the competition-to see. Suddenly Justin started getting a lot of “hits” from strangers, he was getting thousands of views, and then hundreds of thousands; as time went on a man who today is known as his manager: Scooter Braun, had gotten into contact with the family and asked if he could fly Justin to Atlanta - that one trip changed Justin’s life all for the better. Soon enough Scooter had Justin signed to a label with Usher under so-so def, and def jam islands. On May 18th, 2009 this pop sensation released his first single “One Time” which won over many hearts and brought him to have the fan base in which he has today. Now in 2012, Bieber is 18, has over 20 Million followers on twitter and recently made an appearance on “The Voice” where he announced the new album titled “Believe” will be released June 19 of this year – this will be Bieber’s fifth album.

Justin Bieber is very proud to be Canadian and he flaunts it often. Justin could easily be portrayed as the everyday Canadian – understanding, modest and of course funny! When asked by ’Rolling Stone Magazine’ about being an American citizen in his future his response was: "You guys are evil," he jokes. "Canada's the best country in the world." He adds, "We go to the doctor and we don't need to worry about paying him, but here, your whole life, you're broke because of medical bills. My bodyguard's baby was premature, and now he has to pay for it. In Canada, if your baby's premature, he stays in the hospital as long as he needs to, and then you go home." Bieber calls U.S. home since he was discovered on YouTube, but the teen sensation couldn’t be prouder to be a Canadian. “Hello Newfoundland… Junos this weekend!! Proud to be Canadian” Bieber tweeted last year. Also he adds “U.S. I love you but dreams come true in Canada too. Lol. I’m living the Canadian dream this weekend.”

Sexualized Ads

The first example of sexualization in the media is a diesel jeans campaign which first started in Italy and their jeans spread all over the world, it was released in 2005. This advert won a silver award at Epica. This advertisement is an example of pain is pleasure because it shows a man tied to a pole and there are two topless women with whips, it suggests that they are whiping him and the smile on his face indicates that his is enjoying it, making it a good example of pain is pleasure.

The second example I chose is an example Women as sexual objects. This is an ad for Kit Kat at the beginning of the year, and the photo implies that she is enjoying the bar in a sexual way instead of a practical commercial who would have shown her eating the Kit Kat.

sext !

We have previously watched a documentary in class, in my opinion it was quite effective but also quiet far fetched. One point that I thought was very far-fetched was when they said that playing princess as a young age actually primes them for sexualization later. Girls go from wanting to be the prettiest to wanting to be the sexiest. I don't believe this because playing princess at a young age is a way express yourself, for a young girl to explore her imagination and to have fun. I also don't believe the part where they state that students are using adult devices and appear not to be capable of understanding the difference between private and public because I believe their how they act reflect on their parents. When parents are strict with their children the less trouble they will get into, but if the parent is too strict with their children they will act out. However when they say "70-80% of boys watch porn" it is a common thing for a young boy around the age of 16-17 to watch a porn video, I don't think that 70-80% of boys actually sit down and watch a whole porn video, boys see at least one porn video once in their lifetime. I think it's a curiosity thing not an addiction. Also I agree with the statement they said that girls either have to portray themselves as sexual objects or be invisible, this is true because the media has made the image of a "pretty" girl, so girls need to live up to the standards they see on tv. Girls want to be noticed by boys so they will do anything to attract the attention of boys.

The sexualization of Miley Cyrus is becoming increasingly scandalous. Miley Cyrus has been a role model for girls from the young age of 3 up to the teenage years and sometimes older. Young girls look up to her because she was known around the world for being Hannah Montana, and she had the "best of both worlds", but lately Miley is being compared to Brittney and Lohan for going from innocent to sexual. Young girls still look up to Miley, but the media has made it impossible for young stars to obtain their innocent looks and made them chose a more sexual look. The parents of these young girls need to try to keep the innocent image of Miley alive so their daughters won't dress or act like the now sexualized Miley Cyrus.

blog-ratings ~

One blog I found was "Anamika's Blog on Dating and Relationships". I chose this blog because as a person with a serious relationship it caught my eye because it gives articles that help couples communicate and build a stronger relationship. The blog has many different articles from relationship advice to articles on being single. The blog wasn't very appealing or exciting the text was just plain and there was no background color, but other than that it was a good/informative blog. I rated this blog a 27/30.

One blog I found was The Friendship Blog, I rated this blog a 27.5/30 because the content was very clear and to the point, also it contained information that showed how to keep your friendship strong and what makes a great friendship. The blog contained videos on the topics of each blog post, which help with people who have a difficult time paying attention to what people write. I liked best that the site is down to earth and life like and that it contained information for all ages.

Twitter-Mania

Twitter was created by a 10 person start up in San Francisco, called Obvious, which is a mixture of messaging, social networking, microblogging for the idea that people should enjoy an "always on" virtual omnipresence. Twitter's rapid growth made it the object of intense interest and a fair amount of ridicule. But it's use in Iran in the wake of the disputed presidential election of June 2009 to organize protests and disseminate information in the face of a news media crackdown brought it new respect. The article deals with the way media affects our lives by controlling what we say and how many characters we say it in. Twitter is a form of mircoblogging made popular by celebrities, politicians and businesses. People use Twitter to get news out, for example "...people in Iran and Moldova created their own searchable tags on Twitter to organize protests against their governments and share information with each other and the world. Moldovans used the network to rally more than 10,000 young people against their country's Communist leadership." Also in the article it said that Twitter was court ordered, petitioners said that the "Internet protocol addresses" should be private information and the information needed was too broad. Twitter is out there for news and entertainment, it has become a part of a lot of people's daily habits. Twitter can be accessed by computer, cellular phone or any devices with Internet. It affects some peoples self esteem because someone could tweet a nasty tweet about that person and not mention any names. Twitter is like a way to say what you want without the drama of putting it on Facebook and without the drama of saying it to a persons face. In my opinion Twitter is entertaining, but people need to realize that it hasn't always been around and they lived without it, society would be "healthier" if it didn't play such a huge part in peoples' everyday lives.

Media Literacy at a Glance*

Yesterday in class we viewed two clips on Media Literacy, after seeing these videos I realized that media is a big influence in our world today. One thing I learned that media is very powerful but not always in good ways, sometimes media is very dangerous. Media today is very influentual and everyone believes everything that is being said whether on tv, on websites, in magazines and newspapers. Some things printed or commercialized in media turn out to false and give people bad rep. The second thing I learned was that the goal of most cooperations, including those who own media, is to make media above anything else. Cooperations use media to get their product advertised so more people will be interested in purchasing it and make it look more popular if it's advertised well and often. Company's make want their products to sell so they try to get it out there with the use of media. Also I learned that there are a lot of "Junk Values" which are products that we don't need but they are shown in the media that we need them and that they make us feel good and our life won't be the same if we purchase one. Company's make crap products but they are shown in the media as great products that will make your life 10x better. The final thing I learned was no media is objective there is always one group or someone who gets left out, this shows true because there are advertisements in newspapers and on television that are only directed to a specific group of people.
